Human Rights & Civil Liberty

On the 2nd October 2000, the Human Rights Act 1998 came into force. This made rights under the European Convention on Human Rights enforceable in our courts.

The Convention is a binding international treaty that the UK government helped to draft and has sought to comply with for over 50 years.

Prior to the Human Rights Act, the Convention rights were not enforceable in our courts and cases had to be taken to the European Court of Human Rights, in Strasbourg. This was a very slow and expensive remedy.

The law of human rights is now a very important part of our law.

Human rights points are now commonly raised in all kinds of litigation and legal issues.

Children Law UK is a small but influential charity established over 30 years ago. We bring together professionals and policy makers who work in the legal field. Our aim is to ensure that children, young people and their families involved in legal proceedings receive the very best outcome from those proceedings.

Each year our work benefits approximately 25,000 children who are involved in legal proceedings. By nature of being involved in such proceedings the vast majority of these children are extremely vulnerable.
