The
Environmental Law Foundation The Environmental Law Foundation (ELF) is the national UK charity founded in 1992 that helps people use the law to protect and improve their local environment and quality of life. Through our network of specialist lawyers and consultants across the UK, we provide free guidance and continuing support to those in need of assistance. ELF also provides education and training, promotes lectures, conferences and seminars, produces publications and encourages policy development. Above all, we provide a voice for communities and individuals. The UK Environmental Law Association (UKELA) is the UK forum which aims to make the law work for a better environment and to improve understanding and awareness of environmental law. Its members are involved in the practice, study or formulation of Environmental Law in the UK and the European Union. It attracts both lawyers and non lawyers and has a broad membership. For further information upon environmental law and upon wild law can be found by following the links on the left hand side. It is well respected as a source of comment by Government (Westminster, the Scottish Parliament and the National Assembly for Wales). It has given advice on many occasions regarding the development of Environmental Law on issues including water quality, biodiversity, contaminated land, waste management and emissions trading. It also provides a network for those interested in environmental law to enable them to develop their professional skills and standing and organises some major events to stimulate debate and provide a focus on topical issues.

Community face battle to save jurassic coastline environment
Residents in Seaton were incensed with council plans for re-generating the town centre. They felt the views of the community were being ignored and there were environmental implications of the plans which included raising a floodplain by two metres with soil from local marsh land. The development proposes the building of a massive supermarket along with a car park on an artificial island that will destroy the flora and fauna of the floodplain. James and Sandra Semple, founders of the campaign group Stand Up for Seaton, were helped by ELF solicitor Charlie Hopkins of EarthRights Solicitors, and meeting with him helped give the groups objections a legal footing. The case is ongoing and Charlie Hopkins is continuing to help.
We couldnt have done it without ELF, Mr and Mrs James and Sandra Semple
Threat to the Blue Ribbon Network
ELF was contacted by Thamesbank,
a group campaigning on protecting and improving the River Thames. Thamesbank
was particularly concerned about proposed changes in river policy in Londons
regional spatial strategy, the London Plan, with fears over rising water levels
and climate change and inappropriate development along the river. The case was
handled by ELFs new advice service for London cases, ELF Plus. Assistance
from ELF barrister , Robert McCracken QC, of the Chambers of Robin Purchas QC,
was obtained and Thamesbank were able to submit a response to the consultation.
Mr Jack Pine approached ELF, on the advice of a previous volunteer, seeking help in order to prevent a re-development on green belt land. This land had been used for grazing for the past three-hundred years and is advertised as a walking site by the local council. Following advice from ELF solicitor, Douglas Raine of Ottaways, a letter of objection was submitted to the council, resulting in the withdrawal of the planning application.
A very helpful and
focused service, I will recommend it to others, Mr Jack Pine
